Atlas GmbH, Ganderkesee, has taken the lead in development with the design, manufacture and delivery of the first battery-powered material handler, the 200 MH accu. The handling machine has now been handed over to the Hamburg city cleaning department (SRH). It is used at the Liebigstraße recycling yard. The ATLAS 200 MH accu has an operating weight of 21 t and the power of its battery drive is 140 KW/190 HP. At 10 m reach, it is equipped with a demolition grapple. The cab can be extended to 5.20 m eye level of the driver.

Four battery modules instead of one diesel engine

The machine is not powered by a diesel engine, but by four built-in battery modules that weigh a total of 900 kg. They drive the hydraulic system and move the machine itself. It goes without saying that there are no diesel emissions whatsoever. The working time with this battery capacity is about 3-4 hours, the charging time is about one hour. In reality, this means that you work half a day, the machine is loaded during the break and that you can continue working in the second half of the day. Ultimately, that is a full working day in diesel-free battery operation.

A real development milestone

“This is a real milestone in Atlas history. In intensive development work, we have made real progress, above all in the direction of ecology,” says Brahim Stitou, CEO of Atlas GmbH. A number of people are involved in this. The initiator of the project, Thomas Maas (Head of Technical Service SRH) contacted the regional dealer Atlas Hamburg. Reinhard von der Wehl, Managing Director of the Von der Wehl Group, and especially Nils Schmuck (construction machinery sales at Atlas Hamburg) coordinated the project between all those involved. FRAMO GmbH from Löbichau worked together on the electrical components. She has many years of extensive experience in the field of drive systems for electric municipal vehicles. This experience was used to quickly implement the project for the ATLAS material handler. Ultimately, the engineers at Atlas GmbH created the conditions for converting the ATLAS 200 MH material handling machine from a diesel-powered model to a purely battery-powered model. This is a big step in product development.
