The infrastructure works for a new roundabout and commercial estate near Hamburg are progressing quickly – thanks to a 26-tonne ATLAS 260 LC crawler excavator. This rock-solid machine has gained even more capability through the addition of a boom swing motor

Just as Hamburg is a prosperous major city, the surrounding region is also expanding. In Rellingen, close to Hamburg and the A23 motorway, a new roundabout is being built to provide access to the “Tangstedter Chaussee” commercial estate. The task is somewhat demanding because the subsoil has limited bearing capacity. For the ATLAS crawler excavator, however, this is far less of a problem. Standing firmly on a robust crawler undercarriage with 800 mm track shoes and powered by a strong 129 kW / 175 hp engine, the 260 LC moves with ease around the site. It now forms part of the fleet of H. Uhl Straßen- und Tiefbau GmbH of Elmshorn.

Power and fine precision
H. Uhl is handling not only the infrastructure works for the roundabout but also the entire development of the commercial estate. In total, 12 hectares are being prepared. The 260 LC is an excellent fit for this scope of work. Its hydraulic system, with a pump capacity of 380 l/min at an operating pressure of 340 (370) bar, enables powerful – and above all fast – movement of the boom and attachments. Thanks to the three operating modes, this is also achieved economically: the machine always uses only as much power (and therefore fuel) as is genuinely required. The design and manufacture of the excavator aim to deliver optimum performance with centimetre accuracy. Precision work, for example profiling manhole excavations or trenches, is straightforward. The ATLAS crawler excavator is equipped with a boom swing motor with 70° swing to the left and right, and a hydraulic quick coupler. A grab interface is integrated. It can handle ATLAS attachments as well as thirdparty tools. This equipment makes the 260 LC a machine with a broad working envelope.

The strong front end
The strength of the 260 LC becomes evident when it handles loads of up to 22 tonnes with the corresponding monobloc boom. Its cut-in height of 9.36 m, digging depth of 6.83 m and reach of 10.55 m are excellent values for productive and efficient work – supported by the excavator’s powerful hydraulics. The basis for this is the heavy X-type undercarriage and the precise, robust all-steel construction made by ATLAS. The upperstructure is equally dynamic, offering a slewing speed of 11 revolutions per minute. On the Rellingen site, the crawler excavator is working with various buckets from 0.48 m³ to 1.87 m³.

Like being in your living room
To enable the operator to deliver good performance throughout the entire working day, a pleasant working environment is essential. The ATLAS comfort cab provides exactly that. There is generous space both when entering and inside the cab. The premium seat – adjustable independently of the console and equipped with lumbar support and more – offers excellent comfort. Visibility all round is excellent, thanks to cameras and the lowered right-hand side of the upperstructure. The upperstructure can be locked at the press of a button. A clearly laid-out control panel allows direct selection via buttons or through digital menus. Naturally, the cab includes a quiet air-conditioning system and space for a cool box with power supply. At 69 dB(A) inside the cab, it is as quiet as a living room.

A wealth of experience
H. Uhl Straßen- und Tiefbau GmbH was founded back in 1904 – in the Kaiser’s era – more than 120 years ago. The company has remained based in Elmshorn near Hamburg. From its small beginnings, it has grown into a solid medium-sized business. Today, more than 100 employees, over 70 machines and company premises covering 18,000 m² form the basis for delivering projects close to the market and to customers. The fleet also includes 20 ATLAS excavators. The partnership between Uhl and the dealer ATLAS Hamburg has been in place for decades. Trust and reliability have developed into a close, dependable relationship.
